How could a person predict that the Colorado Rockies would go all the way to the World Series in 2007? How could anyone foresee that they would win 21 of the last 22 games to take the National League Championship Series—in two sweeps—for gosh sakes!
In March, during spring training in Arizona, the team was shaping up to be once again, the cellar-dwellers of old. What happened in September? We Coloradans don’t much care. We care that it happened—against all odds—that the Rockies won the National League pennant and made it to the World Series!
According to one Denver University student, the Rockies had a one-in-10,000 chance of winning the National League Division tiebreaker game against the San Diego Padres—and they did! Incredible! They were on a roll now; they swept the National League Division Series against Philadelphia. Then they went to the Championship Series against the Arizona Diamondbacks, and they won in four games straight. Then came the hiatus while the American League finished their games. For eight days, the Rockies cooled their heels. Was it difficult for the team to wait that long? Who can tell? We all watched as the Red Sox put away the Cleveland Indians, four-to-zip. Oh-oh. Did the Sox now have the momentum? Could the Rox find their rhythm? The fans didn’t care! The fans loved their Rox!
But the Rox never found their rhythm, and the Sox carried their momentum all the way to the end. They swept the Rox in the World Series—but it was STILL a magical season! It was fantastical, gigantic fun and excitement.
We sat in the rain, we paid the scalpers’ prices, we won tickets in contests, we lived and breathed the “Purple Passion,” and most of all—we believed. Our faith will carry us forward to the next spring training, and a new chance at the world title. Go Rockies!
